Il primo artista del quale vorrei parlarvi oggi è Daniele Petronelli.

Classe 1979, inizia la sua carriera in radio per poi crescere come dj-producer e diventare oggi produttore affermato e remixer di artisti del calibro di Laidback Luke, Vandalism, Starkillers, Dr.Kucho, Christian Fisher, Tocadisco, Fedde le Grand e molti altri; nonché label manager della sua etichetta No-Logik records.

Ma proviamo a conoscere più da vicino questo Artista italiano stimato nel nostro paese ma soprattutto all’estero.

- Raccontaci la tua giornata tipo. Hai momenti particolari in cui produci musica?

La giornata la passo in radio (il mio primo amore) o in alternativa a montare lana di roccia e pannelli distrutti il giorno prima per tenere insonorizzato lo studio e poterlo utilizzare di notte sembra un luogo comune ma è il momento in cui la mente tira fuori le idee migliori, le puoi quasi toccare… poi magari ti rendi conto che stai toccando un mouse di gelatina e capisci che era un illusione!

- “Aqua Marcia” è una delle tue tracce più popolari. Come è nata la collaborazione con Mario Miranda e Audiocut?

E’ nato tutto per caso, Audiocut mi ha mandato una demo con un coro di bambini africani che cantavano in una scuola… gli ho “sequestrato” la voce e ho creato una base tech house con Mario… risultato? 3 mesi al numero 1 di Beatport (una delle tracce piu scaricate nel 2010) e vinile ancora tutt’ oggi ricercato… niente male dai!

- Pensi che l’Italia abbia qualcosa da invidiare alla scena clubbing di altre nazioni europee?

Mi avvalgo della facoltà di non rispondere… anzi no rispondo: all’estero il dj è ancora una figura importante, in Italia è un pr che fa i tavoli!

- Hai in previsione un tour nel 2012?

Il tour mondiale 2012 parte il 18 Febbraio dal Mexico per poi approdare in Francia, Germania, Texas, California, Usa, Brasile, Svizzera, Croazia, Ucraina, Inghilterra e Spagna.

Quando non sei in discoteca sei in studio. Ma di cosa si occupa Daniele Petronelli nei momenti in cui non si dedica alla musica?

Alle donne.

- Un’artista del passato a cui ti ispiri maggiormente e uno del presente che stimi molto?

La mia passione per la musica elettronica nasce dai dischi dei Kraftwerk che “studio” da quando ho posato il biberon, uno recente è sicuramente Trentemoller.

- E’ noto che hai remixato nomi molto forti, qualche esempio per i lettori del blog?

Davvero son tanti… giusto per citarne qualcuno Laidback Luke, Tocadisco, Fedde Le Grand, Dj Chus, Wally Lopez, Dr.Kucho e a breve verrà fuori un remix 2012 della hit disco d’oro del 94 Alex Party “Don’t Give Me Your Life”.

-Nel 2007 hai fondato la tua etichetta discografica No-Logik records, oggi è una realtà, qual’è il trucco?

Lavoro serio, artisti giusti e prodotti di qualità!

- Per concludere quest’intervista, scegli un unico artista – tra i tanti con i quali collabori e hai collaborato – con il quale hai maggiore feeling e ti diverti di più?

Forse l’unico pregio che ho è che vado daccordo e riesco a divertirmi (quasi) con tutti… non sopporto solo la gente invidiosa, che invece di lavorare parla troppo sono gli unici con i quali c’è un astio reciproco!

From this moment, start for me a new wonderful experience as blogger. Who knows if I’m ready and I’m going to fulfill the expectations of so many people, primarily those who have given me the opportunity to approach this project, completely new for me; but that excites me because it talks about music. Music, emerging artists and accomplished ones through national and international scenes, who artistically enriched me and with whom I share the style and the passion for the same work.

The first artist I would like to talk about today is Daniel Petronelli.

Born in 1979, he began his career in radio; Then he has grown as dj-producer and finally, nowadays, has become a famous music producer who also remixed artists like of Laidback Luke, Vandalism, Starkillers, Dr.Kucho, Christian Fisher, Tocadisco, Fedde le Grand and many other. Petronelli is also manager of his own label, the No-Logik Records.

But let’s try to get to know this Italian artist, estimated in our country but chiefly abroad;

- Tell us about your typical day. Do you produce music during particular moments?

I spend my day in the radio (my first love), or ,as an alternative, setting up mineral wool and panels destroyed the day before to maintain the studio sound-proofed and to use it at night.

It sounds like a cliché but it’s the moment when mind brings out the best ideas; you can almost touch them…. Then, maybe, you realize you’re touching a gelatin mouse and understand that it was just an illusion!

- “Aqua Marcia” is one of your most popular tracks. How’s born your partnership with Mario Miranda and Audiocut?

It all happened by chance. Audiocut sent me a demo with a choir of African children singing in a school … I had “kidnapped” the voices and I created a tech house backing-track with Mario … the result? For 3 months at number 1 on Beatport (one of the most downloaded tracks in 2010) and the vinyl is still sought-after… not bad at all!

- Do you think Italy has anything to envy to the clubbing scene of other European countries?

I take the fifth…… If anything, I answer: abroad, the DJ is still an important figure; in Italy is just a P.R that fills the tables!

-Have you scheduled a tour for 2012?

The 2012 world tour is starting on February 18 from Mexico and then it will land in France, Germany, Texas, California, USA, Brazil, Switzerland, Croatia, Ukraine, England and Spain.

-When you’re not at the disco, you are in studio. In that moments when he does not dedicate himself to music, what is Daniel Petronelli dealing with?

 With women.

 - An artist of the past that mainly inspired you and one of the present you think highly of.

My passion for electronic music was born from the disks of Kraftwerk that I have “studied” since I laid down the feeding bottle. The recent one is definitely Trentemoller.

- Everybody knows that you have remixed some of the most important musical artists; Can you give some examples, just for the blog’s readers?

They are really a lot… just to name a few: Laidback Luke, Tocadisco, Fedde Le Grand, Dj Chus, Wally Lopez, Dr.Kucho and soon will be released a 2012 remix of the 1994 gold record hit “Do not Give Me Your Life ” by Alex Party .

-In 2007 you founded your own label, No-Logik Records. Today is a reality. What’s the trick?

Serious work, the right artists and quality products!

- To conclude this interview, pick up a single artist – among the many with whom you collaborated and still collaborate – with whom you have the best feeling and enjoy the most.

Maybe the only quality I have is that I get along and have fun with (almost) everyone. I just can’t stand envious people, who talk too much instead of working. These are the only ones with whom there’s a mutual hatred!

Mike Tompkins, 25 anni, nato nella fredda regione di Alberta, in Canada, sta spopolando sulla rete con i suoi video.

Oltre 70 milioni di visualizzazioni sul suo canale, un passaggio nel famoso show americano Elle DeGeneres, al Late Show ed una promettente collaborazione con Timbaland.

Cos’ha di cosi speciale questo ragazzo?  Tutte le sue cover sono interamente realizzate da lui a capella, musica e canto, o come dice il suo motto “Solo con voce e bocca”.

Un prodigo  musicale cominciato presto, alla tenera età di 8 anni quando suo padre gli ha insegnato a fare i primi beat box. Da allora il suo amore per la musica e la sua passione per il beat box lo hanno portato lontano, fino a spopolare globalmente su youtube ed essere notato da grandi marchi dell’industria musicale americana.

Wait! E’ riuscito a contattarlo ed a fargli qualche domanda per farlo conoscere anche al pubblico italiano.

Ciao Mike, grazie per la tua disponibilità nel parlare con noi.

Prima di tutto, per il pubblico italiano che ancora non ti conosce molto bene, raccontaci qualcosa su di te. In poche parole, prova a definirti e dicci come è cominciata la tua passione per le covers a capella.

Ho cominciato a creare musica all’età di 13 anni. A quell’età ho cominciato a riproporre artisti e registrare i pezzi che facevo. Semplicemente per divertimento con alcuni miei amici. Questo divertimento è poi diventato una grande passione ed un lavoro vero e proprio. Le covers a capella sono arrivate molto dopo però. Ho cominciato solo due anni fa. Ho pensato fosse una idea divertente ed alla fine ho scoperto che alle persone piace veramente questo genere di cose.

Come scegli le canzoni da trasformare in covers? E’ qualcosa nella melodia, nel genere musicale o perché ti piacciono e basta?

Adoro la musica pop, cosi generalmente tutto comincia da me che ascolto una canzone un po’ di volte e comincio a immaginare nella mia testa come fare tutte le parti.

Più o meno, possiamo vedere come realizzi le tue covers, ma vuoi dirci qual è la parte più facile e la più difficile nel realizzarle? Ci piacerebbe sapere se hai qualche aneddoto da raccontarci….

Per quel che riguarda la parte musicale, mi risulta piuttosto facile. Ma quando si tratta della parte video allora li si tratta di una vera sfida. La parte video richiede molta programmazione e moltissima post-produzione. Il video ‘Fireworks’ di Katy Perry  è stato davvero difficile da produrre perché si era deciso di proiettare su di me vari colori con un proiettore. Quindi dovevano essere ben posizionati e perfettamente sincronizzati con il brano. E’ stato davvero molto difficile da realizzare.

Il primo ad averti notato è stato Perez Hilton (ndr sito riguardante celebrità, gossip e novità nel mondo dello spettacolo molto popolare negli Stati Uniti), che ha pubblicato la tua cover di “’Katy Perry – Teenage Dream/Bruno Mars – Just the way you are”, definendoti anche ‘Bello all’occhio ed all’orecchio’. Cos’hai pensato in quel momento?

Ero davvero molto contento, perché per me significava che ancora più persone avrebbero visto e condiviso il mio lavoro. Ero davvero emozionato.

Recentemente, anche Timbaland (ndr noto produttore musicale famoso a livello internazionale) ti ha notato e ti ha chiesto di partecipare alla realizzazione del suo prossimo progetto “Shock Value 3”. Prima di allora, avresti mai immaginato di diventare cosi famoso?

Mi sento molto fortunate ad aver avuto tutte le possibilità che mi sono state date fino ad oggi.  Ovviamente, anche lavorare con Timbaland.  E’ stato come un sogno divenuto realtà e sono davvero grato alla tecnologia disponibile oggi (youtube) che ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale nel rendere tutto questo possibile.

Dando un’occhiata al futuro, so che stai producendo un album interamente fatto da canzoni scritte e suonate d ate. Ci puoi dare qualche anticipazione in proposito?

Nel 2012 ci sono molte cose che ho in programma di fare, incluso canzoni originali scritte da me.

Mike Tompkins, 25 years old, born in the cold region of Alberta, Canada, has become so famous on the net thanks to his videos. Hi Mike, thanks a lot for your kindness to talk with us.

First of all, for italian audience that still doesn’t know you very well, tell us something about you.

 In a few words define you and tell us how’s started your passion for covers a capella?  

I started creating music at the age of 13. That’s when I started producing artists and recording music. Just for fun as a hobby with some friends. Then it grew into something I loved and did for a living. The a capella covers came later in my life. I started two years ago, it was just a random idea I thought was funny and it turned out that people really liked it.

How do you choose the songs you’re going to sing as covers? Something in the tune or the genre….or just because you like them?

I love pop music, so it usually starts with me listening to a song a bunch of times and figuring out in my head how to do all the parts.

Pretty much, we can see how you realize the a capella work. But would you tell us the easiest and the most difficult part in realizing them?

We’d like to know if you have some good story to tell us….

The music always comes easier for me. It’s the video aspects that are challenging. It involves a lot of planning and post-production to make my videos. The video “Firework” was extremely tough to plan because we projected colours on me with a projector. So they had to be timed and placed perfectly. VERY difficult to do.

The first who has noticed you was Perez Hilton, publishing your cover of ‘Katy Perry – Teenage Dream/Bruno Mars – Just the way you are’ and defining you “Pretty on the eyes and ears”.

What did you think in that moment?

I was really excited, for me it meant more people are going to be able to see and share what I’m doing so it was really exciting.

Recently, even Timbaland has noticed you and asked you to join in his project ‘Shock Value 3′. 

Before that, have you ever imagined to become so famous?

I feel really blessed to have had the opportunities I’ve had so far. Working with Timbaland included. It has been a dream come true and I’m very thankful for today’s technology (YouTube) which has played a huge role in making this happen!

Looking forward to the future, I know you’re producing an album made only by original songs written by you.

Can you give us some anticipations about that? 

In 2012 people can expect a lot more content out of me including original songs!

Abbiamo conosciuto Keira durante le registrazioni di un programma in onda ogni venerdì su Deejay TV. Il palcoscenico su cui si esibiva non era sicuramente adatto per mostrare appieno le sue doti, ma quel poco che ci ha fatto ascoltare ci ha interessato, tanto che ci siamo chiesti: Keira chi è?

Abbiamo scoperto, così, questa ragazza che si è trasferita a Milano, proveniente da Barletta, per realizzare il suo sogno di fare musica, la musica che lei ama. Keira ha una laurea in Scienze dell’Educazione e si occupa di bambini con disabilità. Guardandola hai subito l’impressione di avere davanti una ragazza, dolce, acqua e sapone, sincera e educata. Chi si immagina lo stereotipo della DJ da discoteca, sicuramente non può pensare a una ragazza così, la sua timidezza la rende ancora più interessante e sicuramente riempie la mente di interrogativi. Quando le parli ti guarda sempre negli occhi, e stupisce per le idee che ha e per la forza con cui racconta i propri sogni e il proprio lavoro. Artisticamente poi la ragazza è molto brava ha all’attivo diversi dischi prodotti da un’etichetta tedesca la Vi Tva. In Germania il genere elettronico ha fatto scuola ed essere pubblicati significa avere un valore aggiunto alla propria musica. Keira infatti si reca con frequenza in terra tedesca per serate dove è la Guest Star e dove è davvero conosciuta. In Italia sta lavorando per affermarsi, e sta raccogliendo i frutti del suo duro lavoro. Ecco cosa ci racconta:

Keira parlaci un po’ di te:

Al di fuori della vita da DJ lavoro con i bambini disabili, nelle scuole materne, è un lavoro che mi piace è una passione, proprio come la musica, mi riempie quello che faccio. Alla fine però bisogna fare delle scelte ed in questo momento la musica è al primo posto. Infatti da quest’anno lavoro solo 3 ore al giorno, il resto del tempo lo dedico a scrivere pezzi, produzioni, serate, insomma faccio la DJ/musicista a tempo pieno. Tra l’altro inizialmente i miei genitori non sapevano che io facessi questo lavoro. Il momento della rivelazione è stato duro, anche perchè è un ambiente visto sicuramente in modo falsato, soprattutto da una generazione più vecchia. Loro pensavano ad un futuro diverso per me. Oggi però sono tranquilli, la mia felicità per loro è la cosa più importante.

Come è arrivato il trasferimento a Milano?

E’ una città che ho avuto sempre nei miei sogni e poi per il mio lavoro è decisamente il posto migliore.

Da quanto fai la DJ?

Suono da 5 anni, però è una passione che viene da molto lontano. Da piccola avevo sempre in mano strumenti musicali, cercavo di imparare a suonare tutto quello che mi piaceva fino ad arrivare alla mia musica oggi. Ho cominciato prima a produrre musica a PC, poi piano piano ho imparato a mixare ad usare i piatti insomma all’aspetto più live di questo tipo di lavoro. La cosa che più mi piace è la produzione, creare qualcosa, realizzare un pezzo dall’inizio e poi ascoltarlo, eseguirlo sono le cose che mi appagano di più, il Live set è una conseguenza, ma non la prima cosa a piacermi.

Hai prodotto pubblicato dei dischi?

Collaboro con un’etichetta tedesca. Hanno pubblicato alcuni miei pezzi e remix su vinile, in Germania il vinile è ancora la massima espressione del DJ. Mi reco anche spesso in terra tedesca poi per promuovere i miei dischi e suonare live. Lo scorso hanno uno dei miei remix è entrato nella loro Top Chart e per me è stato motivo di grande soddisfazione. Devo dire che vendo bene.

Quindi la tua carriera è spedita.

Sì, ho un ritmo serrato nelle mie produzioni. Credo che oggi produrre sia la cosa che ti permette di distinguerti da tutti gli altri e di crescere. Presto uscirò con un remix di Da Fresh per la No-logik records, un pezzo che per me è mitico e risale al 2007. sono molto orgogliosa di questa possibilità e di questo prodotto. Ho diversi progetti inediti con varie etichette italiane e tedesche.

Lavori tanto all’estero e in Italia?

Qui da noi lo scenario è diverso, siamo un poco indietro rispetto a quello che può proporti l’estero. Però stiamo crescendo e credo di essere all’interno di questa evoluzione del nostro panorama elettronico.

Dove ti potremo vedere prossimamente?

L’ultimo dell’anno dovrei essere a Palermo,  e poi nel nuovo anno a Firenze e in Sardegna. Stiamo però cercando di fare una scrematura per scegliere solo i locali giusti, quelli che mi possano maggiormente aiutare a crescere, quelli che propongono la mia musica, il genere che io prediligo. Non voglio snaturarmi e non posso.

Alla fine perchè non hai ancora deciso di emigrare, visto il successo che ti tributano all’estero?

L’idea c’è, ma è sicuramente da valutare bene e più in là nel tempo, ho ancora molte cose da fare e da dare qui in Italia, anche se effettivamente per il genere che faccio io le scelte sono poche e obbligate.

La cosa che ci ha colpito di Keira è che non si propone come la bella DJ , ma come la brava DJ quella che sa suonare che non si impone per immagine, ma per qualità. Per lei la strada sarà più lunga, ma sicuramente raccoglierà i frutti che merita, perchè il talento e la passione ci sono e sono fortissimi.

How did you move to Milan?

How do the DJ?

Sound from 5 years, but it is a passion that comes from afar. As a child I always had musical instruments in hand, trying to learn to play everything that I liked until you get to my music today. I first started making music to PC, then slowly I learned to mix in short, to use the dishes to the most live in this type of work. The thing I like most is the production, create something, make a piece from the beginning and then listen to it, run it are the things that gratify me more, the live set is a result, but not the first thing to like.

You have produced published discs?

I work with a German label. They released some of my pieces and remixes on vinyl, the vinyl in Germany is still the ultimate expression of the DJ. I travel often to Germany, then also to promote my record and play live. On one of my remixes have entered in their Top Chart, and for me it was a source of great satisfaction. I must say that I sell well.

So your career is shipped.

I have to say yes, I have a fast pace in my productions. I believe that today is producing the thing that allows you to differentiate yourself from everyone else and grow. Soon I’ll go out with a remix of Dafresh for No-logik records, a piece which for me is legendary and dates back to 2007. I’m very proud of this opportunity and this product. I have several new projects with various Italian and German labels.

Works both abroad and in Italy?

Here the scene is different from us, we are a little behind compared to what they can offer you abroad. But we are growing, and I think in this evolution of our electronic music scene.

Where will we see next?

The last year I should be in Palermo, and then in the new year in Florence and Sardinia. However, we are trying to make a skimming to choose only the local fair, more than I can help you grow, those who propose to my music, the kind that I prefer. I do not want distorted and I can not.

At the end because you have not yet decided to emigrate, given the success that you bestow abroad?

The idea is there, but it is definitely good and to be evaluated further in time, I still have many things to do and to give here in Italy, but actually for the genre that I do have a few choices and forced.

The thing that struck us is that Keira is not to provide the good DJ, but as a good DJ that can play that is not imposed by image, but for quality. For her, the road will be longer, but certainly reap the rewards they deserve, because the talent and the passion is there and very strong.

Sedici anni e tracce che sembrano uscite dai cassetti di Oval o Jen Jelinek. Un’intervista al futuro della musica sperimentale italiana.

Presentati e definisci la tua musica in poche righe, sollevami da quest’ingrato compito.
Il mio vero nome è Tommaso Pandolfi, vengo da Perugia, nato ad Ancona nel 1995, ancora non ho 17 anni e già faccio i “peggio droni” come mi dissero dei miei amici qualche tempo fa. Sinceramente non riuscirei a definirti ancora la mia musica nel modo giusto, ma siccome va di moda mettere post davanti a tutto ultimamente vorrei chiamare il mio genere semplicemente “post”.

Da dove viene il tuo nom de plume, “Furtherset”?
A dir la verità non me lo ricordo. Partorii l’idea a fine 2009 credo. A quelli che me lo chiedono però gli dico che deriva dall’ultimo disco dei Chemical Brothers, anche se non è vero. Almeno evito di sprecare il fiato.

Tu hai 16 anni. Mentre i tuoi coetanei passano il tempo a vestirsi da subumani e accoppiarsi nelle discoteche pomeridiane, tu ascolti Oval e finisci su The Wire.
Finire su The Wire per la recensione del Dancity Festival 2011 è stato molto eccitante. Credo che sia stato il più giovane musicista ad esserci stato citato.

Cosa ti ha spinto a dedicarti al tipo di musica che produci? Qual è il percorso che ti ha portato fino a qui, hai una formazione musicale?
Fondamentalmente non ho mai suonato insieme a nessun’altro, eccezione fatta per il mio precedente gruppo di musica elettronica. Molto “adolescenziale” come progetto, non ti cito neanche il nome perché era leggermente orrendo. Naturalmente l’avevo inventato io. Prima di cominciare a suonare da solo ho studiato pianoforte a livelli abbastanza bassi a causa della mia poca voglia di studiarlo; tutt’ora lo studio, in contemporanea con della sana teoria musicale. In quest’ultima per ora sono leggermente ignorante.

Tu lavori molto sulla dilatazione, la rarefazione sonora, la ripetizione e la sovrapposizione dei suoni. I tuoi brani non hanno quasi mai una base ritmica riconoscibile. Esiterei quasi a chiamarli “brani”, somigliano più che altro a degli estratti sonori di un ipotetico universo (e relativo rumore) cui ti hai accesso e da cui registri di tanto in tanto 4-5 minuti di audio. Non sei l’unico a produrre musica del genere: quello che mi lascia senza parole è l’oggettiva e spaventosa rapidità (per via della tua età) con cui sei arrivato a questa padronanza dei mezzi che usi, e a produrre brani di questo livello. Perché hai deciso di dedicarti a questo tipo di musica? Cosa cerchi di suggerire o di creare, o su cosa vuoi riflettere/far riflettere?
Lo stimolo che mi ha portato a fare la “musica” che senti è stata la mia voglia di differenziarmi dai miei coetanei e cercare di uscire dai limiti della provincialità perugina, nient’altro. Quello che cerco di fare con la mia musica è spingere i miei ascoltatori ad una ricerca dei particolari, cosa che ormai si fa raramente.

Cosa usi per produrre e per suonare dal vivo? Come procedi per comporre un brano?
Utilizzo vari sintetizzatori e un pedale delay, e un Korg MS-20 appartenuto al musicista Maurizio Bianchi. Mi è stato prestato da un amico di famiglia a tempo indeterminato. Nei miei live per ora non uso un pc, ma vado armato di 2-3 synth e il mio delay. E suono scalzo.
Un mio pezzo può nascere in molti modi, da un suono che mi piace, da dei rumori o da delle idee che avevo in testa da prima. Per comporre uso Ableton Live. Fino a qualche mese fa usavo Cubase, ma era troppo complesso per me.

I tuoi musicisti/produttori preferiti (non necessariamente relativi al tuo ambito)?
Proprio ora sto ascoltando “Evil Twin” dei Modeselektor. A parte i miei ultimi ascolti leggermente più tamarri del solito, gli artisti che ho più ascoltato e amato sono stati, e sono, gli Smiths, il Miles Davis elettrico e Aphex Twin. E i My Bloody Valentine.

Il traguardo musicale più gratificante finora? Non valgono eventuali sgallettate maggiorenni rimorchiate ai live.
Grazie alla musica che faccio rimorchiare è leggermente difficile.
Il traguardo musicale che finora mi ha soddisfatto più di tutti gli altri è il poter aver suonato a Foligno al Dancity Festival quest’anno: ho conosciuto artisti che fino al giorno prima non avrei minimamente immaginato di poter mai conoscere. E ho ricevuto grandi consigli proprio da quest’ultimi. E complimenti.
Naturalmente non posso sottovalutare come altro grande traguardo quello di aver trovato un’etichetta disposta a pubblicare la mia musica, la Technowagon Recordings, proprio qui di Perugia. Pubblicherò un EP con loro ad ottobre di quest’anno.

La tua musica è troppo complessa per non essere il risultato di influenze anche esterne all’ambito musicale. Come ti occupi della tua crescita culturale? Leggi, studi, fai cose, vedi gente?
Fortunatamente la mia famiglia ha continuamente stimolato i miei interessi culturali. Mio padre per guadagnarsi qualcosa all’università faceva il tenore, vedere un figlio musicista non fa che renderlo contento no?
Sono molto influenzato dalle letture che faccio, amo Lovecraft e Asimov. Leggo anche libri di fisica quantistica senza capirci niente.

I luoghi e gli ambienti in cui vivi (Perugia, la tua casa, l’Umbria) influenzano la tua musica? In che modo?
Credo che Perugia non sia molto d’ispirazione per la mia musica. Diciamo che l’ambiente musicale perugino, almeno per la mia poca esperienza, non è molto aperto a quello che io faccio. Non credo ci sia la giusta apertura mentale, o sufficiente cultura, in molti. E qui sto parlando del pubblico sopra i 20 anni. Evito completamente di parlare del pubblico della mia età o quasi per non mettermi a piangere e ridere contemporaneamente.
Naturalmente in città e in provincia trovo aiuto grazie ai ragazzi dell’etichetta, da parte del Dancity e dagli organizzatori delle serate Elektro Lab e da altre care persone.

Un luogo o una situazione, anche irreali, in cui ti piacerebbe suonare?
Mi piacerebbe poter risuonare a Torino, magari di nuovo con gli amici di Just Music Makers. O trovare delle date quest’inverno che non mi intralcino lo studio, magari di sabato no?
Per le situazioni irreali mi piacerebbe suonare al Club to Club oppure al Sonar.

Sto per rilasciare il mio primo EP con la Technowagon Recordings e pubblicherò dei remix nei prossimi mesi. Uno per U.X.O. e un altro per gli Apes on Tapes su Homework Records.

A 16 years old boy and a bunch of tracks that sound like some Oval’s or Jen Jelinek’s lost tracks. An interview to the future of Italian experimental electronic music.

Introduce yourself.
My real name’s Tommaso Pandolfi, I am based in Perugia and was born in Ancona in 1995. I am not 17 y.o. yet and I already make some “bloody drones”, as some friends said some times ago. I honestly can’t find the right words to define my music, but since it seems common lately to place “post” before everything, I’d define my music simply as “post”.

Where does your art name come from, “Furtherset”?
I don’t remember honestly. It came up in late 2009 I think. However, when I am asked about this, I usually say it comes from last Chemical Brothers’ album, even if that’s not true. At least I don’t waste time and words.

You’re 16. While the other guys of your age spend their time dressing like subhumans and copulate in some afternoon underage parties, you listen to Oval and are featured on The Wire magazine.
Ending up on The Wire within the review of Dancity Festival 2011 has been very exciting. I think I’ve been the youngest musician named there.

What brought you to this genre of music? Have you some musical background?
Basically I never made music with other people, except for my previous electronic music project. Very “teen”, and I won’t tell you the name – it’s slightly awful. Of course, I came up with it. Anyway, before starting playing music by myself I studied piano – very low level since my lack of will to study it; I still study it however, together with musical theory. I’m aware I’m a bit ignorant in that.

You work a lot on dilation, repetition and overlap of sounds. Your tracks have almost never a distinct and identifiable rhythm. I even hesitate to call them “tracks”, they mostly sound like some audio extracts from a hypothetical universe you access and from which you record 4-5 minutes of audioscape. You’re not the only one on Earth making such music: what actually leaves me speechless is the objective quickness with which you reached such conscience and control of the hardware you use. Why did you decide to explore such kind of music? What are you aiming at, what do you want to create or suggest?
What drove me to make the music you hear is my will to stand alone from my contemporaries, try to cross the limits of the place I live, nothing else. What I try to make with my music is to push listeners to look for details, which is something quite rare nowadays.

What hardware do you use, both studio and live? How do you build a track?
I use some synths and a delay pedal, and a Korg MS-20 which belonged to Maurizio Bianchi. I borrowed it from some friends of my family – indefinitely.
About my live acts, I don’t use a laptop but rather 2-3 synths and my delay pedal. And, I play barefoot.
My tracks can have a number of possible genesis, from a sound I like, or some noises or ideas I had in mind before. I use Ableton Live to arrange my tracks. I have used Cubase as well, but it was too complex for me.

Your favourite musicians/producers?
I’m listening to Modeselektor’s “Evil Twin” right now.
Except the music I’ve listened to lately which is quite uncool maybe, the artists I love the most are Smiths, the “electric” Miles Davis and Aphex Twin. And also My Bloody Valentine.

Your greatest musical accomplishment so far? Adult chicks picked up at your gigs are not included. 
Well, my music does not make picking up girls that easy. The musical accomplishment that make me happier so far has been the chance to play at Dancity Festival in Foligno this year, I met many artists that I never imagined I would have met one day. And I even got some tips and advices from them. And compliments as well.
Of course, another accomplishment is having found a label willing to release some of my tracks, Technowagon Recordings, based right here in Perugia. We will release an EP in October 2011.

Your music is far too complex for not being the result of external influences. How do you take care of your cultural growth? You read, you learn, you do stuff… ?
Luckily, my family always inspired my cultural interests. My father used to be a tenor back at university to earn some living: having a musician son makes him happy.
I am also much influenced by what I read. I love Lovecraft and Asimov above all, and I also read quantum physics books – without understanding anything.

The places you live in (Perugia, your house, Umbria) do somehow influence your music?
I don’t think Perugia is much inspirational for my music. The environment is not that open to my music, at least for what I’ve experienced. I believe there’s not enough open-mindedness or enough culture yet. And I’m referring to above-20y.o. people… I just won’t mention underage people or people of my age, that would make me laugh and cry and the same time.
Yet, I still have found help from some valuable people here, from the guy at my label to Dancity Festival staff, Elektro Lab Parties staff and other nice people.

A place or a situation, even unreal, you’d love to play in?
I’d love to play in Turin again, maybe together again with the guys of Just Music Makers. Or to find some winter dates – maybe on Saturdays, so that does not conflict with school.
About some unreal situations… well, I’d like to play at Club to Club or Sonar festivals.

Abbiamo scambiato quattro chiacchiere con Francesco Curci, in arte Paura. Uno dei componenti, assieme a Tayone e Clementino, del gruppo Videomind. Già figure storiche della scena hip hop italiana si sono uniti per dar vita ad un progetto che spazia del French Touch alla Italo disco, dal Funk dei Parliaments alle contaminazioni rock dei Run Dmc.

Come nasce il nome Videomind e quali sono le finalità del progetto?

Il nome nasce da una nostra suggestione. Siamo quelli cresciuti a cavallo tra gli ʻ80 e i ʻ90. I figli della Video Generation. Quelli con la testa nel video della TV, nei Videoclip, nei Videogames. Molti di noi, specialmente quelli con uno spirito meno critico rispetto a quanto ci circonda, ne sono stati risucchiati e sono diventati schiavi dello schermo. Noi tre crediamo di essere tra i fortunati che sanno prendere solo il meglio di quanto ci viene offerto dai monitor che ci circondano, ma gli automi sono tanti. Ecco perché ci materializziamo in degli alter ego robotici. Le finalità del progetto sono varie. Sotto lʼaspetto musicale ci siamo posti lʼobiettivo di fondere in chiave funk la musica elettronica, la disco e lʼhip hop old school. La matrice è la black music ma il punto dʼarrivo vuole essere un sound europeo, che pesca nella tradizione aframericana ma che non è una semplice emulazione. Il party come strumento di diffusione di valori, come i padri della cultura hip hop insegnano. “The Old School is all about having fun and a good time in a place to be. REAL old school hiphop is about HAVING FUN. And GOOD TIMES.” (Kurtis Blow). Crediamo di poter comunicare cose intelligenti e profonde facendo sorridere, usando lʼironia e la satira come armi principali. Poi vorremmo sfatare certi luoghi comuni, radicati nella società italiana, che dipingono chi fa rap come un individuo emarginato, sempre incazzato, abitante di un quartiere difficile e con una condizione familiare disastrata. Uno che vuole raggiungere fama e ricchezza con ogni mezzo necessario, lecito o illecito. Ovviamente lʼabitante medio del “belpaese” non si riconosce in questo quadretto ed, inevitabilmente, si etichetta il rap in Italia come un genere prevalentemente adolescenziale. Noi vogliamo fare arrivare la nostra musica a chiunque, a quante più persone possibili, ed essere una voce fuori dal coro. Crediamo di essere individui che possono dire cose interessanti sia per un ragazzino con la mente aperta, che per i suoi genitori.

Quindi siete critici nei confronti della società italiana ma non ne vivete ai margini?

Esatto. Nel modo più assoluto. E lo stesso discorso vale per il nostro rapporto con i media. Non li critichiamo ciecamente ne ci rifiutiamo di sfruttarne il potenziale. Sappiamo che tutte le cose hanno aspetti positivi e aspetti negativi. Prendi la TV per esempio. Un sacco di gente butta i suoi migliori momenti interessandosi alla vita privata di Fabrizio Corona. Ma ci sono anche cose interessanti come programmi che divulgano cultura. Sono in netta minoranza, lo sappiamo, ma esistono! Internet ha segato le gambe al mercato musicale, ha creato anarchia e ha dato la possibilità a qualunque musicista di sentirsi una star per cinque minuti, ma ha fatto emergere anche artisti che probabilmente, senza internet, non sarebbero stati presi in considerazione. La nostra analisi, in merito a certi fenomeni, ci ha fatto scrivere testi come “Youtube” o come “Telemind”. Che non sono testi di condanna. Suonano più come incitamenti e prendersi il meglio da ogni cosa e di evitare il peggio.

Nel vostro disco cʼè un vero e proprio dialogo tra analogico e digitale. Come avete gestito questo aspetto?

Come ti dicevo prima siamo cresciuti negli 80, quindi, come influenze sonore per noi il passaggio dallʼanalogico al digitale è fondamentale. Ci consideriamo delle menti funk in delle scatole craniche elettroniche. Il suono che ci distingue ne è diretta conseguenza. Poi abbiamo avuto la fortuna di far suonare per noi dei musicisti a dir poco geniali. Roy Paci ai fiati, Federico Poggipollini (Ligabue) alla chitarra, Alessio Manna (Casino Royale) e Davide Beatino al basso. Questo per merito di Tayone (autore della musica e Dj del gruppo) che è amico e collabora con alcuni di loro. Gli abbiamo lasciato libertà assoluta di suonare quello che gli veniva dʼistinto sui nostri groove, e poi abbiamo editato il tutto con il nostro gusto, come se fossero dei sample.

In due pezzi (Lʼimmenso/Radio Pulp) i ritornelli sono cantati da Patrick Benifei, già membro di formazioni come Casino Royale, Bluebeaters e Africa Unite. Come è nata questa collaborazione?

Patrick probabilmente è il mio cantante italiano preferito. Ci tengo a sottolinearlo. Quando abbiamo scritto le parole e la melodia di quei due ritornelli, io e Clemente, abbiamo pensato che solo lui li avrebbe interpretati come avevamo in mente. La sua voce, il suo soul, sono troppo congeniali alla nostra musica, ma in tutta sincerità credo uno come lui potrebbe cantare di tutto e risultare sempre geniale. Ci piacerebbe continuare ad averlo nei nostri progetti in futuro. Poi, oltre ad essere un musicista eccezionale, è anche una persona fantastica.

I primi due singoli, e rispettivi videoclip, estratti dallʼalbum (Music Therapy / Eʼ Normale) sono pezzi molto solari. Quanto questo vi rispecchia?

Abbiamo cercato di bilanciare luci ed ombre nellʼalbum. Il disco suona solare in dei pezzi e notturno in degli altri, è un poʼ come lʼesistenza. Vive di momenti più spensierati e di momenti più introspettivi. Certi pezzi sono addirittura cupi e decisamente riflessivi, ma hanno sempre un certo tiro. Se la cassa non ti fa cadere dalla sedia non ci piace. Scegliere come singoli i pezzi più happy e leggeri dellʼalbum è stata una scelta ben precisa. Ci tenevamo a comunicare lo spirito con cui portiamo in giro la nostra musica. Specialmente in questa che è la fase di startup del progetto. I nostri live set cerchiamo sempre di trasformarli in dei party. Ci piace che la gente che viene a sentirci sia ben predisposta a saltare, ubriacarsi e divertirsi il più possibile. Sul palco ci divertiamo da morire. Questo traspare, arriva al pubblico e fa si che anche loro si lascino coinvolgere dal nostro divertimento.

We chat with Francesco Curci, aka Paura. One of the components, along with Tayone and Clementino, of the group Videomind. Even historical figures of Italian hip hop scene they have joined forces to create a project that goes from the French Touch to the Italian disco,  from funk of the Parliaments to the rock contaminations or Run DMC.

How did the name Videomind born and what are the aims of the project?

The name comes from one of our suggestion. We are those who grew up in between 80 and 90. The children of the Video Generation. The ones with their heads in the screen of the TV,  in the video clip, in the games. Many of us, especially those with a spirit less critical were sucked in and have become slaves of the screen. We believe to be among the lucky ones who can take only the best of what is offered us by the monitors that surround us, but the “robots” are so many. That’s why we materialize in the robotic alter ego. The aim of the project are varied. The matrix is black music, but the point of arrive wants to be a European sound that fishing in the afroamerican tradition but that is not a simple emulation. The party as a means of spreading values such as the fathers of hip hop culture teach. “The Old School is all about having fun and a good time in a place to be. REAL old school hip hop is about having fun. And Good Times.” (Kurtis Blow). We believe we can communicate something intelligent and deep by smiling, using satire as main weapons. Then we would like to dispel some stereotypes, rooted in Italian society, which depict who does rap  as an individual outcast, always pissed, who lives in a rough neighborhood with a disaster family-run. Someone who wants to achieve fame and wealth by any means necessary, legal or illegal. Obviously the inhabitant of our “Bel Paese” doesn’t identify with this picture and, inevitably, the rap label in Italy as a genre predominantly adolescent. We want to get our music to anyone, as many people as possible, and be a lone voice. We believe we are individuals who can say interesting things for a kid with an open mind, that for his parents.

So you are critical of Italian society but doesn’t live on the margins of that?

Exactly. In the strongest terms. And the same goes for our relationship with the media. Don’t criticize it blindly or refuse to exploit its potential. We know that all things have positive and negative aspects. Take TV for example. A lot of people throw their best moments in the privacy of Fabrizio Corona. But there are interesting things such as programs  of culture. Tis programs are in the minority, we know, but there are! The Internet has sawed the legs of the music market, has created anarchy and gave the opportunity for any musician to feel a star for five minutes, but also brought out artists who probably without internet, were not taken into account. Our analysis, on certain phenomena, led us to write text like “Youtube”or “Telemind”. Texts that are not convicted. They sound more like incitement and take the best of everything and avoid the worst.

In your music there is a real dialogue between analog and digital. How did you manage this?

As I said before, we have grown in ’80, then for us the passage from analog to digital is critical. We consider ourselves a funk minds in electronic skull. Our sound is its direct consequence. Then we had the fortune to play with some brilliant musicians. Roy Paci on horns, Federico Poggipollini (Ligabue) on guitar, Alessio Manna (Casino Royale) and David Beatino on bass. This thanks to Tayone (author of music and DJ of the group) who is a friend and worked with some of them. We let him complete freedom to play what was on our distinct groove, and then we edited it all with our taste.

In two tracks (L’immenso / Radio Pulp) the tunes are sung by Patrick Benifei, a former member of formations such as Casino Royale, Bluebeaters and Africa Unite. How did this collaboration born?

Patrick is probably my favorite Italian singer. I want to emphasize that. When we wrote the words and melody of the two choruses, Clemente and I thought that only Patrick would have interpreted them as we had in mind. His voice, his soul, are too congenial to our music, but in all honesty, I think someone like him could sing everything and always be brilliant. We’d love to have him in our plans also for the future. Then, in addition to being an exceptional musician, is also a fantastic person.

The first two singles, and their video clips, excerpts from the album (Music Therapy / E’ normal) are pieces very sunny. How will this reflect?

We tried to balance light and shadow. Lives of more carefree times and more introspective moments. Some pieces are actually very dark and reflective. Choose how individual pieces more happy and light was a very clear choice. We especially want to communicate the spirit in which we carry around our music. Especially in what is the startup phase of the project. In our live set we always try to turn them into the party. We like the people who come jump, get drunk and have fun as much as possible. On stage we have fun as hell. This transpires, comes to the public and makes them even allow themselves to be involved in our fun.

Your inspirations are clear even on your myspace (www.myspace.com/videomind). But Videomind are closer to Daft Punk, Chromeo or the Beastie Boys?

I can answer that: “Three MC’s and One DJ!” The hip hop is the expression form that has changed my life.

What would you add?

We especially like to thank Luca “Nightskinny” Peace, our sound engineer. His mixing and mastering job is the best we could possibly have. And then Daniel Franzese, keyboardist and fourth member of the group, ad onorem. And finally thank you for the space and the attention we have given.
