MODERN SHOEGAZE

Sono un grande affezionato della prima (unica) ondata shoegaze di inizio anni ’90, e sopporto pochissimo e malissimo tutto il revival di parte di queste sonorità – soprattutto il côté pop-malinconico – che sta proliferando di qua e di là da qualche anno. Penso che buona parte delle band riunite sotto questa bandiera (che sia glo-fi, dream–pop, etc.) facciano una una brodaglia pallosa, trendy e tremendamente superficiale di riverberi e compressioni che ha poco e nulla a che vedere con la complessità e la qualità delle produzioni di Curve, Ride, Blind mr. Jones, Slowdive e colleghi. Per tacere della piaga di Hipstamatic e della religione della desaturazione a ogni pie’ sospinto.

Come per ogni cosa, però, c’è sempre qualcosa di buono anche nel peggio, per cui voilà 3 o 4 band di questa nuova ondata che mi sento di salvare e pubblicizzare. A parte gli A Place to Bury Strangers, fuoriclasse e fuori gara che personalmente trovo la migliore e forse unica incarnazione onesta e credibile dello shoegaze contemporaneo – se mai ve ne sia uno. Per capirci:

Gli Scarlet Youth sono una band finlandese/tedesca, e Sofia C è uno dei brani più belli che io abbia ascoltato l’anno scorso.

I Sennen vengono da Norwich (UK) e fanno una musica un po’ più ruvida e complessa, più vicina agli APTBS e al filone noise-rock dello shoegaze. In altre parole, echi evidenti (ma adeguatamente approfonditi) di My Bloody Valentine e Jesus & Mary Chain.

I Mary Onettes sono svedesi, più orientati (anche troppo) verso la new wave di Disintegration dei Cure, ma il loro album Islands ha qualcosa di particolare che non colgo del tutto, forse un senso della melodia superiore alla media (Puzzles e Once I was Pretty), che me li fa apparire piacevoli e ricordabili più di altre band al loro livello. Molto vicini anche al vecchio C86/indie-pop britannico di Sarah Records e simili – apro una parentesi: dovesse mai intrigarvi, non sprecate tempo e risorse per procurarvi tutto il materiale di questo genere. Ci si mette un po’ ad accorgersene, ma che siano album Mighty Mighty, Easterhouse, Pastels, Orchids, è sempre lo stesso brano.

Altre band non stratosferiche ma nemmeno pessime che mi sento di consigliare: Young Prisms, Wild Nothing, No Joy.

I am a big fan and lover of the first (and unique) early ’90s shoegaze wave, and I barely can stand all this new revival of part of such sounds – mostly the pop/melancholic côté – that is popping up and flourishing all over nowadays’ indie musical panorama. I believe that most part of the bands who belong to such new wave (call it glo-fi, dream-pop etc.) make an utterly boring, trendy and tremendously superficial slop of echoes and compressions that has very few / nothing to do with the complexity and the quality of the records of Curve, Ride, Slowdive and Blind mr. Jones – to name a few. Not to mention the Hipstamatic plague with its modern religion of indiscriminate desaturation.

However, since there’s always something good even in worst, here are 3 or 4 bands of such wave I that I find interesting. I won’t include A Place to Bury Strangers, which deserve a post on their own since I personally find them the best, more honest and solid – perhaps, the only true – incarnation of contemporary shoegaze:

Scarlet Youth are a german/finnish band, their Sofia C is one of the most beautiful tracks I’ve listened to last year.

Sennen come from Norwich, UK, and make some slightly more harsh and complex music, closer to APTBS and to noise-rock shoegaze path – i.e. My Bloody Valentine and Jesus & Mary Chain.

The Mary Onettes come from Sweden and are more (maybe too much) oriented towards the new wave era of The Cure’s Disintegration. Their album Islands has however something peculiar, maybe a higher sense of melody (Puzzle, Once I was Pretty) that makes them sound more interesting and enjoyable than other similar bands. They’re quite close to C86/Sarah Records’ british indie pop as well – by the way, if you’ll ever get interested in that, don’t waste time in searching all bands and albums. It’s basically always the same track playing.

Other bands – not stratospheric but not even that bad – I feel you may like: Young Prisms, Wild Nothing, No Joy.
