Nella terra d’Inghilterra mentre le Spice Girls facevano ancora provini e le adolescenti di tutto il mondo cercavano di superare il durissimo trauma dello scioglimento dei Take That, cresceva spontaneo e splendido il cosidetto Brit Pop.

Un genere musicale che prende, dichiaratamente ed in molti casi anche sfacciatamente, ispirazione dalle melodie rock and roll anni 60 e si declina a seconda dei casi con suoni New Wave piuttosto che Grunge. L’elemento più forte che rende così carismatico e accattivante questo fenomeno sono le sue radici così sentitamente britanniche.

Definitely Maybe è l’esordio degli Oasis e la pietra miliare del Brit Pop.

E’ l’album manifesto della band, tutto ciò che ambivano essere e che sarebbero poi effettivamente stati: rock and roll stars.

Un album dai pezzi ben assortiti, forse autoreferenziali, ma coerenti con quello che erano gli Oasis del primo giorno, sfrontati, spudorati e strafatti.
Basso e batteria fanno da trama e ordito all’intero album e ogni canzone diventa una polaroid, immediata e eterna. Gli accordi e le parole trasudano forse troppa superbia e irriverenza, ma soprattutto quella voglia di riscatto rispetto alla vita fumosa delle periferie di Manchester.

Oltre a segnare l’avvento di un genere musicale, che sì, forse è di non troppo vaga ispirazione beatlesiana, questo album è il sogno di due fratelli incazzati che nel 1994 hanno contribuito a acculturare le masse plebee galvanizzate da band patinate e pettinate, con un po’ di rock and roll.
